What Exactly Entails a Boob Job?

Breast Implants are the most common cosmetic procedure done these days.  It is a process of increasing the size of a woman’s breasts by inserting an implant underneath the skin. 

        There are two different types of implants on the market.  The first one is a saline-filled (salt water) implant. The implant is only filled with the water after it has been put into place then through a tube the water is pumped into the implant which then appears as a real breast.  The main concern with the saline filled implants are that they do not feel and look as real as gel or silicone implants.  They also are more likely to leak or break, but since the implant is filled with sterile salt water it is easily absorbed into the body and won’t be of harm

        The other type of implant is a silicone gel filled implant.  The silicone is a thick sticky substance which is pre-filled into the implant.  The surgeon just makes an incision and easily pops the implant into the hole.  The use of these implants has been restricted and then the ban was lifted due to worries or bleeds, leaks and ruptures of the gel through the implant.  Modern medicine has done research to make the silicone very thick so that if the implant did leak, the gel wouldn’t leak at all.  You can basically cut it with a knife and it will stay the same shape.  These feel very realistic and look so real you can’t tell the difference.  

        Implants can also be smooth or textured surfaced.  The smooth are most common as they prevent rippling and other surfaces abnormalities.  Their surface is like that of a balloon and they are the most commonly used implants used today.  The textured implants are kind of like sandpaper and were formulated to prevent capsular contracture (tightness around the implant).  This theory is still unknown and hasn’t been proven as true yet. 

        Finally implants are either round or teardrop shaped.  Most commonly used are the round implants.  They look very realistic in the breast pocket and even if they do rotate the shape of the breast won’t change.  The tear-dropped shaped implants claim to look more like real breasts because real breasts hang and produce a tear shape.  These are actually are less desirable because if they do rotate in the body they will look weird and freakish.  No one wants exclamation point breasts I presume! 

        Discuss these and any other questions that you have with you doctor. Don’t feel bad by asking them a lot of questions, this is your body and you need to know what is going on.   Breast Implant Surgery or Breast Augmentation Surgery is still surgery and should be treated as a major procedure.
